This loop circles one of Vermont’s highest and most distinctive peaks, Camel’s Hump, and is designed for flexibility and specifically, to get you onto some of Vermont’s most interesting back roads. Loop 1C will contain fewer antique shops than the previous BuyWay loops. You begin by heading west to Burlington, where you can revisit some of the shops you may have seen if you have already completed BuyWay 1. From there you head south on Rt. 7 to Vergennes, then east on Rt.17 through Bristol and over the Appalachian Gap to Waitsfield. Finally, you have a choice of getting back to Barre on paved valley roads, or should you prefer to include magnificent views, up over the hills on paved and well maintained gravel roads. We recommend a series of possible add-ons for this day, such as brunch at Shelburne Farms, non antique shopping, a dip in Vermont’s cool clean waters, or passing through several of Vermont’s signature covered bridges.
Suggested Route of Travel: This loop is designed to be more leisurely and will include more time driving than the other loops. It begins from Interstate 89 at exit 13 where you will take the spur 189 to Shelburne Rd./Rt. 7 south. You will pass shops that you may have already visited if you completed BuyWay 1. Follow Rt. 7 to Shelburne, home of the famous museum, then through the smaller villages of Charlotte and Ferrisburg. Turn right onto Rt. 22A and check out Vergennes, America’s smallest city. Return to Rt. 7 via Plank Rd. then follow it south to New Haven Jct., where you will turn left on Rt. 17. Continue on Rt. 17 through Bristol then up over the Appalachian Gap and down into Waitsfield and the Mad River Valley. After visiting the shops in Waitsfield you have two options. Continue on valley roads following Rt. 100 north to Rt. 100B, then a quick left on Rt. 2 to I89 south to return to Barre. Or for a more scenic drive, head south on Rt. 100, turning left into Warren Village, then left again on Brook Rd. A few miles up the road you will turn right onto Roxbury Mtn. Rd., going up and over the mountain, for a short stretch on a well maintained gravel road. In Roxbury village turn right onto Rt. 12A to the intersection with Rt. 12 where you will turn right.. Turn left onto Rt. 64, following it to Rt. 14 in Williamstown and turn left. From there you can follow Rt. 14 to the center of Barre, or take an immediate right in Williamstown onto Graniteville Rd. which will take you to Millstone Hill.
